Two Mustangs Place in Top 3 at Greco State

Four Downers Grove South/Suburban Sprawl wrestlers participated in the Greco State Tournament this past weekend at Lincoln Way Central High School.  Greco Roman Wrestling is a style where holds are primarily from the waist up and a wrestler may not grab an opponent's leg, or use their legs to put their opponent at a disadvantage.  It makes for a tough and physical style of wrestling where hand fighting is essential.

Senior Thomas "Junior" Nimakoh wrestled a great tournament placing 3rd at 160 lbs in the Junior Division.  Junior only lost two matches on the day while winning five.  Placing 3rd at the Greco State Tournament puts Junior in the first position to qualify for the Junior National Tournament in Fargo, ND.  Junior HWT Michael Hobbs also placed 3rd at the tournament.  Hobbs wrestled the #3 ranked HWT in the country Michael Johnson in his final pool match.  Hobbs dominated the first period winning 5-0, but lost two close periods following the first and finished 2nd in his pool.  In the cross over, Hobbs wrestled a familiar face in Chris McDermand from Libertyville.  Hobbs and McDermand have squared off in Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco the past two years.  McDermand came out on top in this match dropping Hobbs to the 3rd/4th place match where he won and placed 3rd in the tournament.  Nimakoh and Hobbs will both compete at the second chance qualifier at Sycamore High School on June 1st.  Wrestlers will wrestle a mini-tournament at their weight clases and whoever comes out on top will have to beat Junior and Hobbs in two out of three matches.

Freshman Cormac Burke and Junior Shane Varghese also participated in the Greco State Tournament.  Junior Michael Gastadello, who attends DGN and is a member of Suburban Sprawl placed 4th at 170 lbs in the Junior Division.

The Spring season will come to a conclusion at the Second Chance Qualifier at Sycamore High School on June 1st.
