DGS Wrestling Spring Update

It was a busy Spring for the Mustang Wrestling program as we once again had a full Freestyle and Greco season as well as hosting two Freestyle events in the Field House at DGS and traveled to both the Freestyle and Greco State Tournaments.  Below you will find the highlights for the Spring.

SUNDAY, APRIL 12TH- IL FREESTYLE CLUB CUP- At Downers Grove South

In what has become the premier dual Freestyle event in the Spring, Downers Grove South once again hosted the IL Freestyle Club Cup.  Twelve teams, including Suburban Sprawl (DGS, DGN, Barrington, Rolling Meadows) participated in a freestyle dual format for the 6th year of the tournament and the fifth year that DGS has hosted.  It was a great event that saw many IL state placers and champions as well as many Fargo qualifiers and All-Americans battling throughout the day.  Team Poeta (coached by 3X NCAA All-American Mike Poeta) won the tournament going 4-0 on the day and winning the 6th Annual IL Freestyle Club Cup.  Suburban Sprawl, which consisted of nearly 3/4 wrestlers from DGS took 6th place in the loaded field going 2-2 on the day in duals.

SUNDAY, APRIL 19TH- FREESTYLE DEVELOPMENTAL- At Downers Grove South

One hundred kids from grades 1st through 12th gathered for a Freestyle Developmental tournament where kids wrestled three Freestyle matches on the day.  It was the perfect tune-up for the IL Freestyle State Tournament.

IL GRECO STATE TOURNAMENT- LOCKPORT HS

Freshman Sergio Villalobos (Cadet-195) and Sophomore Zach Muller ( Cadet-285) both won Greco State Titles and for the first time in Mustang history, the team boasted multiple State Champions in either of the international styles (Freestyle/Greco).  Muller and Villalobos dominated the competition and were largely untested on the day.  Each of them will compete in the Cadet Greco National Championships in Fargo, ND in July.  Freshman Keiran Burke also participated in the Greco State tournament.

IL FREESTYLE STATE TOURNAMENT- UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

Nine Mustangs participated in the Freestyle State Tournament which is one of the most competitive high school freestyle tournaments in the nation.  IL is consistently among the top in the nation in producing dual team and individual national champions, so placing at this tournament is no small feat.  Freshman Sergio Villalobos took 3rd at Cadet 195.  Villalobos was on his way to the finals when in the process of tech falling his opponent he slipped of the top of him and ended up being caught on his back.  Sophomore Zach Muller dominated the competition at Cadet 285 and took 1st place becoming the first Mustang to win Freestyle State since Willie Anaya back in 2012.  Muller's title earned him a trip to Fargo where he will compete in the Cadet National Championships in July.  Villalobos would go on to compete in the Southeast Regional in Atlanta in Freestyle where he would pin his way through the tournament also earning a spot in the Cadet National Championships with Muller.

Other Mustangs who participated in the tournament were current 8th grader Jeff Nugent, FR-Kuba Diggory, SO-Jacob Liaromatis, SO- Jacob Chisholm, JR-Calum Bonds, JR- Cormac Burke.

SUNDAY, MAY 31- CAR WASH FUNDRAISER

In what could go down as one of the coldest days in late Mat history, 35 Mustangs gathered to wash cars in the parking lot adjacent to Cozzi Corner and Advanced Auto Parts at 75th and Lemont.  While battling the sun was a concern in 2014, battling the cold and wind was the major concern this year.  However, at the end of the day, because of the efforts of the Mustangs and the parents that were there to help, the DGS Wrestling program was able to raise some funds that will help with many initiatives for the 2015-2016 season.
