Mustangs Advance Eight to Sectionals, place 2nd as a Team in IHSA Regional

The DGS Mustangs claimed 2nd place in the IHSA Regional for the third consecutive year this past weekend at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL.  LT outdistanced the Mustangs by a score of 181.0 for the Lions and 155.5 for the Mustangs.  Cross town rival DGN finished in 3rd place in the nine team Regional with a score of 141.50.

The team race was very tight throughout the day as the Mustangs and Lions traded places between 1st and 2nd.  The Mustangs pulled within six points after Joe Nugent's title at 132, but the Lion's middleweights proved to be too much and they extended their lead on the Mustangs.

Individually, the Mustangs advanced eight wrestlers to the IHSA Sectional Tournament which is the most for the Mustangs since 2001.  The Mustangs also had two Sectional alternates.  It was a great day of wrestling for the Mustangs as they wrestled well beyond their seeded expectations and had several wrestlers avenge losses earlier in the season throughout the day.  Every wrestler in the Mustang line-up scored teams points as this was a true team effort.  Another note on the day is that only one of the eight Sectional qualifiers is a senior, which means next year the Mustangs will return 7 Sectional qualifiers for the first time in school history.

The eight remaining Mustangs will move on to the IHSA Sectional Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Hinsdale Central High School.  Below you will find the results for each of the qualifiers and alternates:

113-  Ahmir Hooks-SO-  Hooks was unseeded and knocked off the #4 seed and #3 seed  Morton wrestler who had previously defeated Hooks in a dual meet in route to claim 3rd place on the day.

120-  Calum Bonds- SO- Bonds bested his #4 seed by one in route to claim 3rd place and a birth in the Sectional tournament.

132-  Joe Nugent- JR-  Nugent won his second Regional title with three wins, including two by fall.  Nugent looks to claim his second consecutive IHSA State qualification this weekend.

138-  Tyree Johnson- SO- Johnson lost a close match in the finals and claimed 2nd place on the day and his first Sectional qualification.
 a
160-  Shawn Jager-  JR- Jager lost a tight match 3-2 match to a DGN rival in route to claiming 2nd place and a birth in the Sectional tournament.

170-  Ramy Abd-  JR-  Junior Ramy abd continues to improve by leaps and bounds as he finished 4th in the Regional.  While he is only a Sectional alternate, Ramy has improved at a tremendous rate over the past year.

182-  Ryan Gurski- SO-  The fact that Gurski was unseeded did not stop him from claiming second place and a trip to the Sectional tournament.

195-  Patrick Wilson-  SO-  Wilson was also unseeded but defeated the #2 seed twice on the day in route to claiming 3rd place and a trip to the Sectional tournament.

220-  Zach Muller- FR-  Muller's bid for a Sectional birth came just short as he lost in the "Ultimate Tie-Breaker" with just :03 left in the match.  Muller will be a Sectional alternate, and keep in mind he is only a Freshman!

285-  Michael Hobbs- SR-  The lone senior to compete and qualify for the Mustangs looks to earn his second consecutive state birth after a 2nd place finish.  Hobbs dropped his final match to defending state champion Brian Allen from Hinsdale Central.
