Hobbs and Nugent Both Champs at Sycamore Tournament

Returning State Qualifiers Michael Hobbs (SR- 285) and Junior Joe Nugent (JR-132) both won their respective weight classes at the Annual Sycamore Tournament this past weekend at Sycamore High School.  This is the last of four regular season tournaments that the Mustangs compete in prior to the IHSA State Series which starts at the beginning of February.

Nugent was back in action after being out for almost a month due to injury.  Nugent picked up right where he left off and after battling through a tough 11-8 win over an Illinois Matmen ranked wrestler from Grant in the first round, he rattled off 4 consecutive pins in route to the 132 title.  Hobbs had an equally impressive day dispatching of his first four opponents by fall in only 3:33 (less than two periods).  His final match was against defending state medalist and #2 ranked Adarios Jones from Moline.  Jones and Hobbs have had many close battles during the season and in the off-season, and this match was no different.  After the match ended in regulation at 1-1, two of the best HWT's in the country battled until the ultimate tie-breaker where ultimately Hobbs won 3-1 on a reversal.  Hobbs also won the Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time Award, which was last won by current Mustang upperweight Coach Josh Hill in 2009.

Three other Mustangs placed in the top 8 of the 24 team invitational.  Ahmir Hooks (SO-113) placed 6th, Tyree Johnson (SO-138) placed 5th and Shawn Jager (JR-160) placed 7th.  Overall the Mustangs placed 10th out of 24 teams which was a great showing considering the Mustangs did not fill four weight classes and started six sophomores in a traditionally tough varsity tournament.

The Mustangs pick up action next Friday vs West Suburban Gold Conference rival Willowbrook in a dual meet on Friday, January 17th at Downers Grove South.
