Nine Mustangs Advance to FR/SO Sectional

Eleven freshmen and sophomores wrestled in the AAU FR/SO State Regional this past Sunday at Lyons Township High School.  Nine of the eleven placed in the top four of their weight class to advance to the Sectional tournament next Sunday at Hinsdale South High School.

The FR/SO state series enters its 17th season and is often a preview of some of the best wrestlers in the near future in high school wrestling.  Several Mustangs have had success over the past several years including Junior HWT Mike Hobbs and Senior RJ Hickock who were both State Qualifiers, while Senior Alex Anaya was a FR/SO State Champ when he was a FR.

The 2012-2013 FR/SO squad was well represented with eleven wrestlers and advancing nine to the sectional tournament is a school record.  Five Mustangs won their weight class as DGS had more champs than any other school in the Regional.  Teams scores are not kept in the FR/SO series.  Champs included sophomore Shawn Jager (132 lbs), sophomore Josh Oakes (138 lbs), sophomore Perry Tonoff (152 lbs), freshman Romarro Lamar (160 lbs), and sophomore Marcus Rutledge (HWT).  Freshman Amhir Hooks (101 lbs) and freshman Patrick Wilson (195 lbs) also reached the final before losing in the championship match.  Freshman Tyree Johnson (120 lbs) wrestled back after a tough 1st round loss to third place, and freshman Mark Leflore-Chapman (138 lbs) took 4th to advance to the sectional tournament.  Freshman Calum Bonds and sophomore Danny Gonzalez also wrestled in the regional but did not advance.

The Mustangs had a stellar coaching contingent in their corner consisting of Juniors Shane Varghese, Sam Patula, and Mike Hobbs.  The nine Mustangs advancing to the Sectional Tournament at Hinsdale South High School.  Weigh-ins are from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and wrestling will start at 10:00 AM.  The top four at each weight will advance to the FR/SO State Tournament in Springfield, IL the following week.
