2016 FARGO RECAP

McKyla Kerr- Soon to be senior, McKyla wrestling for Team IL at 198 lbs in the Junior Girls division and advanced all the way to the semi-finals before dropping some matches, but still earning All-American status for the third time in her career in the process.  McKyla not only earned All-American status once again, but also competed for Team IL in the Junior Girls Freestyle Duals where she helped Team IL to a third place finish.  McKyla continues to not only be an inspiration for all females in the sport of wrestling, but to all the other Mustang wrestlers as she battled back from a season ending injury to put herself back on the podium at Fargo.  Congrats McKyla!

Sergio Villalobos-  An incoming junior, Sergio wrestled for Team IL at 195 lbs in both Greco and Freestyle.  Sergio placed 7^th in Greco after advancing to the semi-finals, and followed that performance up with an outstanding run to the finals in Freestyle to finish as the National Runner-up at Cadet 195.  Sergio becomes only the second Mustang (Zach Muller in 2015) to reach the National Finals.  It was truly a remarkable week for Sergio who had previously won the USAW Folkstyle National Title in April.  Team IL won both the Greco and Freestyle team tournaments at Fargo, and Sergio also represented Team IL in the Cadet Greco and Freestyle Duals, as well as the Junior Freestyle duals.  It was a great Spring and Summer for Sergio who will now shift his focus to playing football for the Mustangs.  Congrats Sergio! 

Zach Muller-  Zach, who will be a Senior, wrestled in both the Junior Greco and Freestyle Tournaments.  Zach advanced to the Quarterfinals of Greco before dropping two matches and falling just one match short of earning All-American status.  Zach then competed in Freestyle where he started off with two quick falls.  Zach then dropped an 8-4 decision and was faced with having to win three consecutive matches to become an All-American.  Zach went on a tear, pinning four of his next five opponents, including a pin over IL rival Tom Helton to finish in 5^th place, and to earn All-American status for the third time in his career in Freestyle/Greco.  Zach also finished 6^th at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals in April.  Team IL won the Greco team title and finished third in Freestyle.  Like McKyla, Zach battled back from an injury that kept him out of most of the Spring to be back on the podium at Fargo.  Zach also finished with the Most Falls in the Least Amount of Time (6 falls in 4:33), and had the most falls in the tournament since 2010. 

Congrats to each of the Mustangs who worked extremely hard in the off-season and deserve every bit of success that comes their way.  Also best of luck to the wrestlers who will be competing in Football, Soccer, or Cross Country this fall.  Work hard and bring your SOUTHSTRONG foundation to whatever you do this fall. 

Finally, congrats to Coach Delay, who married Ms. Cerf (Now Mrs. Delay J) this past Friday!  It is wonderful to see two people who are so passionate about helping young people commit to spending their lives together.  The students of Downers Grove South are very lucky to have both of them.
