Mustangs Hoist Alumni Cup Once Again!!!

For the second consecutive year, the Downers Grove South Mustang Wrestling team defeated their cross-town rival Downers Grove North in the 2nd Annual Alumni Cup in a convincing manner, 45-24.  It is actually the fourth time in five years that the Mustangs have defeated the Trojans, but only the second year that the Alumni Cup has been held.

DGS Head Coach Sean Lovelace and DGN Head Coach Chris McGrath conceived the idea of the Alumni Cup in 2014.  It started with an idea of having some kind of a traveling trophy, and then idea was merged with the idea of co-hosting each of the school's wrestling alumni nights.  In it's second year, the Alumni Cup yielded the largest crowd to see a DGS wrestling meet in recent memory.

The DGS Wrestling program also inducted its five inaugural members to the DGS Wrestling Hall of Fame.  State Champions Bob Gassman (1982), Kip Hennelly (1989), and Ben Apland (2008) were inducted along with long-time Head Coaches Larry Gassen and Rick LeBlanc to the inaugural class of the DGS Wrestling Hall of Fame.  Their names and years will be hung on plaques in the newly constructed Hall of Fame Wall in the DGS Wrestling room.

In terms of wrestling, the Mustangs won three of four levels earning victories not only on the Varsity level, but also on the JV and Freshman levels.  It was a great night for Mustang Wrestling, past and present.

The Mustangs finished off the weekend with a sweep of the Naperville Quad as they defeated Batavia 36-24, Lane Tech 67-3, and Naperville Central 40-25.  The Mustangs will be back in action as they host Leyden in a West Suburban Gold Conference dual next Thursday, December 3rd.
