Mustangs Wrap-up Regular Season in Dominant Fashion

The 2012-2013 regular season has come to an end for the Downers Grove South Mustangs.  On the varsity level, the Mustangs went 9-0 in the last three weeks of action including dual meet victories over West Aurora, #22 ranked Waubonsie Valley, and #23 Wheaton North.  The Mustangs also won their final three conference duals vs. Willowbrook (42-26), Leyden (34-16), and Proviso East.  By winning these duals the Mustangs clinched a share of their third consecutive West Suburban Gold Conference Championship, a first in school history.

The JV, JVII, and FR teams also continued their WSC Gold dominance by not only sweeping at all levels in the final three duals, but the JV, SO, and FR teams did not lose a dual in the WSC Gold Conference all season!

On Saturday, April 26th the under-levels all participated in their respective conference tournaments.  Coach Kud led the Freshman at Lyons Township HS to a come from behind tournament win against very strong teams from Hinsdale Central and Glenbard West to win by 20 points.  The Mustangs were led by six individual champions including Eli Brassel (99), Amhir Hooks (106), Tyree Johnson (120), Mark Chapman (138), Ryan Gurski (170), and Patrick Wilson (195).  Patrick Azer (92) also took second for the Mustangs while Romarro Lamar battled the flu but still managed to win the Most Amount of Pins in Least Amount of Time Award.  It was a total team effort and a great way to end another dominant season on the freshman level for Coach Kud and the Mustangs.

Coach Maloney brought the SO team to York HS and brought home a second place team trophy.  The Mustangs finished 10 points behind a strong Oak Park and River Forest team and were led by champions Haak Fredriksen (126), Shawn Jager (132), and Josh Oakes (138), while Matt Harms (106), Perry Tonoff (145) and Marcus Rutledge (285) all took second for the Mustangs.  The sophomores have had a strong season finishing either first or second in all of the tournaments they participated in on the season.

Coach LeBlanc led the JV Mustangs to the JV Tournament at Hinsdale South HS where Sam Patula (195) led the way with a 2nd place finish.  Grant Hall (160) took 3rd for the Mustangs, while Alex Ziomeck (220) took 5th, and Dan Holakovsky (145) and Patrick Graham (285) took 6th on the day.

The Varsity Mustangs second season (IHSA State Series) begins next Saturday at Naperville Central while many of the freshman and sophomore wrestlers will participate in the FR/SO state series which starts one week after the IHSA State Tournament in February.
