Becoming a True Champion

A few weeks back, Downers Grove South PE teacher Kirk Mango came to talk to the wrestling program about "Becoming a True Champion". Coach Mango was a State Champion in the still rings for Willowbrook HS in the 1970's and was also an NCAA Division I National Champion in that same event for Northern Illinois University beating several future Olympians along the way. After his competition days were over, Coach Mango went on to coach several All-State, State Champions, and All-American gymnasts. He has been inducted into several Athletic Hall of Fames. Coach Mango recently had a book published titled "Becoming a True Champion" which chronicles some of his experiences as an athlete and coach, and how athletes of today can channel that inner champion inside them. It was a great end to a fantastic preseason for the Mustangs that saw 20-30 wrestlers regularly lifting and wrestling in the 8-10 weeks prior to the season. Thanks to Coach Mango for making this talk happen and inspiring the boys that afternoon.
