DGS Wrestling Spring & Summer Update

Hello Everyone,

It has been FAR too long since we provided an update on DGS Wrestling but that has not been due to inactivity.  The DGS Wrestling program has been working hard since about mid-March and we wanted to let everyone know what we have been up to and how you can help current and future DGS Wrestlers.

FR/SO STATE & GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Mustangs qualified two wrestlers to the FR/SO State Championships in Springfield, IL and Freshman Jimmy Nugent placed 2nd at 101 lbs and Sophomore dominated the field at 152 lbs winning a FR/SO State Championship.  The Mustangs qualified four Girls to the Girls State Championships in Springfield including Freshmen Gabija and Orinta Luksiute, Sophomore Sharon Leone, and Junior Cristal Lopez-Contreras.  Each of the girls won matches at the tournament and Gabija placed 4th at 101 lbs.

SPRING, GRECO AND FREESTYLE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, & DUAL TEAMS
The Downers Grove Wrestling Club had over 65 kids practicing this spring working on Freestyle & Greco skills in the off-season.  The DGWC went 3-2 in the IL Freestyle Club Cup (hosted by DGS) in a premier freestyle dual meet event placing 7th out of a field of 16.  The DGWC also fielded a second team due to a last minute cancellation so over 12 current and future Mustangs wrestled in the Club Cup.

The Mustangs placed three wrestlers at the Greco State Championships at Lincoln Way-Central High School. Freshmen Jimmy Nugent placed 2nd at 106 and Sophomore Robert Major placed 2nd at 160, which qualified both of them for Team IL and wrestling at the US Marines National Tournament (Cadet) in July.  Junior Brendan Richardson placed 3rd at Greco State and later won the 2nd Chance Tournament to also qualify for Fargo.

Sophomore Robert Major also placed 2nd at the IL Freestyle State Championships, which qualified him for Team IL in Freestyle.  Our girls had a remarkable Freestyle State Tournament placing 3rd overall as a club/team (DGWC) and placing four girls.  Cristal Lopez-Contreras placed 3rd, while Gabija & Orinta Lukosiute and Sharon Leon each placed 4th, which qualified each of them for the Girls Freestyle National Championships in Fargo in July.

Both Robert Major and Cristal Lopez-Contreras were on Team IL for the Dual Team National Championships this couple of weeks.  Robert went 8-2 for Team IL (All-American Dual status) and was a part of a runner-up team finish for IL in both Freestyle & Greco.  Cristal also wrestled for Team IL and helped the IL girls win their first Dual Team National Championship!

DEVILS LAKE & WI DELLS TEAM CAMP
The Mustangs brought a team-high 25 kids to Devils Lake (WI) and the WI Dells Team Camp this past week.  We kicked off our trip with an overnight camping trip where we hiked and did a 5-mile run (.5 straight up to the peak of Devils Lake).  The Mustangs then went to the WI Dells Team Camp and went 10-0 in duals dominating two IL teams that qualified for Team State this past year and also defeating Johnston (IA) and Bettendorf (IA), each of which has won team trophies in IA during the past several years.

FARGO HELP & ASSISTANCE
We are trying to help our (program record) five Mustangs with their Fargo trip.  The trip costs $1,000 each which includes their training camp, team IL gear package, travel & accommodations to and from Fargo, ND in July.  Here are the two ways you can help, 100% of the proceeds go to the kids Fargo trips.  You can help Jimmy Nugent, Robert Major, Brendan Richardson, Sharon Leon, and Cristal Lopez-Contreras here:

  1. Mustangs to Fargo Go Fund Me
  2. Mojos for Fargo-  Eat at Mojo's East Coast Eats on Wednesday, June 26th or Thursday, June 27th and mention or show this image and 20% of the proceeds will go to the Fargo trips.

The D99 Hoops programs are coached by: Kevin Ahrens, Kim Hartsfield, Brett Wolf, Jack Cannon, Michele Geraghty, Patrick Hayes, Arthur Drenth, and Mike DellaMaria.

2018 DGS Wrestling Tailgate- Friday, September 21st

2018 DGS WRESTLING TAILGATE

We will once again be kicking off the year with our annual 2018 DGS Wrestling Tailgate!  The tailgate will be held on Friday, September 21st starting at 5:30 PM before the Mustangs take on the Addison Trail Trail Blazers for their Homecoming game.  All wrestlers, family, DGS Wrestling alumni, and of course new Mustang recruits are welcome.  We will have music, free food (as long as it lasts), bags, and SpikeBall.  This has become one of our favorite annual events because it's not only a great way for the program to get back together but also a great way of bringing in some new blood to the program.  We are looking to host our most well-attended event yet so please plan on coming by next Friday at 5:30 PM!

2018 PRE-SEASON UPDATE

The 2018-2019 Mustangs who are not in a fall sport are already in the swing of things as we have started our pre-season wrestling and strength & conditioning.  We are holding our pre-season wrestling at the new state of the art UFC-Downers Grove gym on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-5:30 PM.  The kids have enjoyed training at the gym and we hope to continue this partnership with UFC-DG for years to come.  Our strength & conditioning efforts have never been better as this year we have officially brought on Coach Dan Vida from MFC Sports Performance in Darien as our lead strength & conditioning coach for the fall, in-season, and spring programs. In addition to a strong strength & conditioning background, Coach Dan also wrestled at Neuqua Valley High School and will bring that knowledge to the table as well.

2018 OFF-SEASON POINTS LEADERS

Finally, two weeks ago the top three off-season point leaders from each of the classes went out to celebrate their efforts at Mago Cantina & Grill in Bolingbrook.  It was a great meal and celebration of a lot of hard work that was put in this past off-season.  We are extremely excited about this group we have this year!

SENIORS:  Jeff Nugent, Mike Garza, Dylan Knoch
JUNIORS:  Brendan Richardson, Cole Gantner, Nick Callaghan

Fargo Fundraisers- 1) Mojo's 20% Proceeds 2) Fargo Lottery Tickets

We wanted to congratulate Senior Sergio Villalobos and Junior Jeff Nugent on qualifying for the 2018 US Marine Corps USAW Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND, which will take place from July 12th through the 20th at the Fargo Dome.  Jeff qualified for the Greco National Championships in the junior division at 160 lbs, while Sergio will compete at 195 lbs in Freestyle in the junior division.  Villalobos has earned three previous All-American honors at this tournament, including a runner-up finish at Cadet 195 in 2016, while Jeff is wrestling in Fargo for the first time.  Both Jeff and Sergio will participate in the Fargo Training Camp at the University of Illinois and will also travel with the Freestyle and Greco juggernaut that is Team IL/USAW to Fargo in July.

Expenses for the training camp and tournament can add up to nearly $1000 each so we are helping Sergio and Jeff out as much as we can.  Below you will find two options on how you can help them cover some of their expenses for one of the best wrestling tournaments in the world.

1) Mojo's Proceeds Fundraiser- Wednesday, June 20th and Thursday June 21st
On Wednesday, June 20th and Thursday, June 21st, when you present the enclosed filer (paper or phone), Mojo's will donate 20% of your bill to the expenses for Sergio and Jeff.  Mojo's is located at 2758 Maple Ave in Downers Grove and is owned and operated by a great friend to the DGS Wrestling program Jon Scoggin.  Please come out and support not only Sergio and Jeff, but also a great local business in Mojo's.  Mojo's East Coast Eats- Downers Grove Website

2) USAW IL Lottery Ticket Fundraiser
Each year Team IL/USAW has team members sell IL Lottery Tickets for $20 each to help fund their expenses.  Tickets are $20 each and you are given numbers for the IL Pick 4 Evening Draw for the month of August.  Your numbers are good for the entire month and you must check the numbers on your own.  Here is how you can purchase lottery tickets to help fund Jeff and Sergio for the IL/USAW National Team:
  1. Complete this PayPal purchase for $20 (or more for multiple tickets)
2.  Once the tickets are delivered, you will receive an email with your numbers for the August IL Pick 4 evening draw.

3.  The DGS Wrestling program will have the hard copies of your lottery ticket and will keep those for you if you win.

DGS Wrestling- Post Season Awards and Youth Wrestling Results

The 2015-2016 season has come to an end for the DGS Wrestling program, as well as all the youth wrestling programs in the area.  To say that the season was a successful one for all levels would be a huge understatement.  While results are never guaranteed in the sport of wrestling, it is always great to see wrestlers achieve at the highest levels after giving so much of themselves to the sport throughout the season.

Below you will find a recap of the IHSA and FR/SO State Series for the DGS Wrestling Team as well as state results from our IESA and IKWF feeder programs.

DGS Wrestling Summer Update

In what seems to have developed into a year round endeavor for some wrestlers, the wrestling "off-season" has finally come to an end.  Some wrestlers began wrestling as early as last September and wrestled through July.  Others began at the beginning of November with the start of the season and wrestled on and off through mid-July.  It is often very humbling to see these young athletes working as hard as they do while trying to balance everything else going on in their life.  I wanted to take the time to recognize all of the DGS Wrestlers for their time and effort this off-season.  Their efforts will no doubt pay dividends when the 2015-2016 season arrives.  Here are some of the highlights from the summer:

  • McKyla Kerr- 4th Place in Junior Freestyle at 172- ALL-AMERICAN

Congrats to all and enjoy a well deserved break.  Good luck to all of the wrestlers who will be playing football, soccer, and cross country for the Mustangs this fall.  Bring the wrestling mentality with you to your other sports and you cannot fail!

DGS Wrestling Spring Update

It was a busy Spring for the Mustang Wrestling program as we once again had a full Freestyle and Greco season as well as hosting two Freestyle events in the Field House at DGS and traveled to both the Freestyle and Greco State Tournaments.  Below you will find the highlights for the Spring.

SUNDAY, APRIL 12TH- IL FREESTYLE CLUB CUP- At Downers Grove South

In what has become the premier dual Freestyle event in the Spring, Downers Grove South once again hosted the IL Freestyle Club Cup.  Twelve teams, including Suburban Sprawl (DGS, DGN, Barrington, Rolling Meadows) participated in a freestyle dual format for the 6th year of the tournament and the fifth year that DGS has hosted.  It was a great event that saw many IL state placers and champions as well as many Fargo qualifiers and All-Americans battling throughout the day.  Team Poeta (coached by 3X NCAA All-American Mike Poeta) won the tournament going 4-0 on the day and winning the 6th Annual IL Freestyle Club Cup.  Suburban Sprawl, which consisted of nearly 3/4 wrestlers from DGS took 6th place in the loaded field going 2-2 on the day in duals.

SUNDAY, APRIL 19TH- FREESTYLE DEVELOPMENTAL- At Downers Grove South

One hundred kids from grades 1st through 12th gathered for a Freestyle Developmental tournament where kids wrestled three Freestyle matches on the day.  It was the perfect tune-up for the IL Freestyle State Tournament.

IL GRECO STATE TOURNAMENT- LOCKPORT HS

Freshman Sergio Villalobos (Cadet-195) and Sophomore Zach Muller ( Cadet-285) both won Greco State Titles and for the first time in Mustang history, the team boasted multiple State Champions in either of the international styles (Freestyle/Greco).  Muller and Villalobos dominated the competition and were largely untested on the day.  Each of them will compete in the Cadet Greco National Championships in Fargo, ND in July.  Freshman Keiran Burke also participated in the Greco State tournament.

IL FREESTYLE STATE TOURNAMENT- UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

Nine Mustangs participated in the Freestyle State Tournament which is one of the most competitive high school freestyle tournaments in the nation.  IL is consistently among the top in the nation in producing dual team and individual national champions, so placing at this tournament is no small feat.  Freshman Sergio Villalobos took 3rd at Cadet 195.  Villalobos was on his way to the finals when in the process of tech falling his opponent he slipped of the top of him and ended up being caught on his back.  Sophomore Zach Muller dominated the competition at Cadet 285 and took 1st place becoming the first Mustang to win Freestyle State since Willie Anaya back in 2012.  Muller's title earned him a trip to Fargo where he will compete in the Cadet National Championships in July.  Villalobos would go on to compete in the Southeast Regional in Atlanta in Freestyle where he would pin his way through the tournament also earning a spot in the Cadet National Championships with Muller.

Other Mustangs who participated in the tournament were current 8th grader Jeff Nugent, FR-Kuba Diggory, SO-Jacob Liaromatis, SO- Jacob Chisholm, JR-Calum Bonds, JR- Cormac Burke.

SUNDAY, MAY 31- CAR WASH FUNDRAISER

In what could go down as one of the coldest days in late Mat history, 35 Mustangs gathered to wash cars in the parking lot adjacent to Cozzi Corner and Advanced Auto Parts at 75th and Lemont.  While battling the sun was a concern in 2014, battling the cold and wind was the major concern this year.  However, at the end of the day, because of the efforts of the Mustangs and the parents that were there to help, the DGS Wrestling program was able to raise some funds that will help with many initiatives for the 2015-2016 season.
