The week for the Downers Grove South Mustang Wrestling Family started with the birth of Coach Lovelace's third son on Monday. Lukas Wayne Lovelace was born on March 10th at 4:23 PM and was 9 lbs and 21 in. Patrice Lovelace (Coach's Wife) is doing well and the other two boys (Liam 4 and Lazo 2) are going through a bit of an adjustment period. Rumor has it that Lukas came out with his elbows in and head up!

Other than the big birth announcement, this was a big weekend in the state of IL for wrestling. The FR/SO State Championships, IESA State Championships, IKWF State Championships, and DII/DIII National Championships all tokk place on this weekend. I don't know that you'll find a busier weekend of the year for wrestling at all levels. The Mustangs were represented well and here is a quick recap from some of the events:
2014 FR/SO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS- Prairie Capital Convention Center- Springfield, IL
Coach Greg Maloney led Calum Bonds (SO-120), Tyree Johnson (SO-132), Patrick Wilson (SO-195) and Zach Muller (FR-220) all competed at the tournament. Johnson earned the highest place finish since Alex Anaya won a FR/SO State Title in 2010 as he placed 3rd at 132 lbs. Johnson dropped a tight match against a familiar foe from Leyden in the quarterfinals. However, Johnson battled back and went 4-0 on Sunday to earn 3rd place. Freshman Zach Muller also placed at the tournament, earning 4th place at 220 lbs. Muller dropped a decision in the semifinal round, then went 1-1 after to earn his place on the podium. Sophomore Calum Bonds was one match away from placing, and Sophomore Patrick Wilson could not repeat as a FR/SO State Place winner. This is the second consecutive year in which the Mustangs have had at least four FR/SO State Qualifiers and also the second consecutive year in which they have placed two at the FR/SO State Tournament. This is a great indication of the future as you will see many of these names from other schools in Champaign over the next two to three years.

2014 IKWF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS- BMO Harris Center- Rockford, IL
Two future Mustangs competed in the most competitive youth organization in the United States this past weekend. Sergio Villalobos (189 lbs) led the way and won the first state title for Cougars since former Cougar and Mustang Willie Anaya won a state title in 2008. Sergio placed 2nd in the Novice Division as a 7th grader and was primed for a state championship this season. Sergio pinned his way to the finals and own his title on a 4-0 decision. It was a great way to end a dominant season for Sergio. Keiran Burke also competed at the state tournament for the Cougars, but did not place in what was one of the most competitive weights at the tournament.

2014 IESA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS- Convocation Center- DeKalb, IL
Six future Mustangs qualified for the 2014 IESA State Tournament in DeKalb. Woodridge Jefferson Junior High had two state qualifiers, both who are in the 8th grade and future Mustangs. Anthony Martinez qualified as a Sectional Champion at 155 lbs and Antonio Cook also was a Sectional Champion and State Qualifier at 185 lbs. Both Cook and Martinez dropped their first bouts and were eliminated from the tournament. Darien Eisenhower had four state qualifiers who will be Mustangs down the road. Joey Strauss qualified at 65 lbs for the Generals while 7th graders Matt Strauss (80 lbs), Tyler Bachara (85 lbs) and Jeff Nugent (112 lbs) won their preliminary round match, only to be eliminated when they lost in the first round, and their opponents did not advance to the semi-finals.
