Michael Hobbs fell one match short of becoming Downers Grove South's first Double All-American in Greco and Freestyle National Championships in Fargo, ND. Hobbs was 2-2 going into the All-American round where he ran into eventual Cadet Runner-up Nicky Allegretti, who is also from IL. Hobbs lost on a controversial call in the first period clinch position 1-0, and lost the hand fighting battle in the second period 1-0 to eliminate Michael from the tournament. This was Allegretti's closest match of the tournament until he lost in the finals to Wyatt Spears from OR, who also won the title in Greco the previous week.
Despite falling one match short from being DGS's first double All-American, Hobbs still is DGS's first All-American in either style since former Mustang and current Michigan Wolverine HWT Ben Apland placed in 2008.
Hobbs tournament ending also puts an end to a very long "off-season" for the DGS Mustang program. Since the regular season ended in February, wrestlers have competed in the FR/SO State Tournament series, the Suburban Sprawl Wrestling Club practices, open mats, and developmental tournaments, Freestyle and Greco State Tournaments, Summer League competitions, four Day DGS Mini-Camp, Northwestern Team Camp, Elmhurst College Camp, and the Asics Greco and Freestyle National Championships. It is safe to say that this has been DGS's most active off-season in the school's history, and we are looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labor in the 2012-2013 season.
Pre-season lifting will begin at the beginning of September, and open mats for the pre-season will begin six weeks prior (late September) to the start of the season (2nd week in November). Until then, we hope that everyone enjoys a lot of time with their families and good luck to all the Mustang Wrestlers who will be participating in Fall Sports in the 2012-2013 school year.
