Hooks and Jager Named to DGS All-Tournament Team
The DGS Wrestling program just completed a very busy weekend as there was wrestling at Downers Grove South on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday, the Mustangs hosted WSC Gold Conference rival Hinsdale South in a dual. It was an evenly contested battle with the Mustangs winning seven matches and the Hornets winning seven. The difference proved to be bonus points as the Varsity Mustangs dropped their second dual in conference after losing to Addison Trail the previous week. The JV and Freshmen Mustangs both won their dual meets against Hinsdale South.
Saturday the Mustangs hosted their 41st annual Varsity tournament, which was changed to a dual team format this year. DGS brought two teams to the eight team tournament which also included Wheaton Warrenville South, Crystal Lake Central, Bloom, Bartlett, Shepard, and Wauconda. The Mustangs went 2-1 in their pool dropping a close dual to AA power Crystal Lake Central. In the cross over, the Mustangs dropped another evenly matched dual to Wheaton Warrenville South 32-28. The Mustangs then went on to defeat Bloom in the third place dual by a convincing margin. Sophomore Amhir Hooks (113) and Junior Shawn Jager (170) both went 5-0 on the day and were named to the All-Tournament team. Returning State Qualifiers Joe Nugent (4-0) and Michael Hobbs (3-0) were undefeated on the day. The DGS Columbia team went 1-3 on the day with a win in the 7th place dual vs Wauconda 39-36. Three freshmen made their varsity debut for the Mustangs as Joe Tonoff, Ryan Olsen, and Jacob Chisholm were in the line-up for the Columbia squad.
On Sunday, the Downers Grove Cougars (IKWF) hosted the Rookie Rumble where over 400 beginner wrestlers competed in tournament. DGS Wrestlers worked and helped coach the young wrestlers throughout the day. It was a busy and exhausting weekend for the Mustangs, but one that will pay dividends for the Mustangs in the years to come.
The Mustangs travel to Morton on Thursday in a WSC dual and will wrestle in one of the toughest tournaments in IL, the Rex Whitlach Tournament at Hinsdale Central High School.
